In this episode of #ConversationsWithGoddard, we meet Glenn Bazemore, a mechanical engineer working on the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope team. Glenn also aims to become an astronaut. His problem-solving prowess helps him contribute to NASA’s next flagship telescope, which is set to probe important questions in infrared astrophysics.

Video Description:
0:00 A close-up of Glenn Bazemore’s face as he looks over his shoulder in front of a blurred background of gray beams with a single light overhead.
0:01 Glenn wears a helmet covering his face. It is green and has red and yellow accents. He wears matching gloves, shoulder pads, and wrist guards. Text “Conversations with Goddard Presents” appears above this image.
0:04 Against a black screen is white text saying, “Meet Glenn Bazemore: Professional Problem-Solver” above a loading bar, which flashes when it is fully loaded.
0:06 Screen fades to black.
0:07 Glenn smiles and gives two thumbs up to the camera. Two men in hardhats stand behind him. Glenn wears a green tropical print shirt. A white arrow points to Glenn with a label reading “This is Glenn Bazemore.”
0:10 Blueprint-style drawing of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. It resembles a barrel. A white arrow points down from above, labeling it “And this is the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.”
0:11 Telescope blueprint rotates for a profile view. Its solar panels resemble wings, and there is a satellite-dish looking element protruding from the top.
0:13 Glenn wears a mask and white jumpsuit with blue gloves. He stands with arms crossed in front of complex hardware with exposed wiring. White text reads, “Glenn is a mechanical engineer working on the Roman Team.”
0:18 A polaroid frame surrounds a photo of Glenn as a child in a driveway, on a go-kart. His dad is perched on the back of the vehicle. Behind the frame is a purple image of the Roman Space Telescope. Text says, “My interest in mechanical engineering stemmed from my family.”
0:19 The photo switches to an image of a young Glenn and his mother standing on a football field at night. He wears a band uniform and has his right arm draped around her shoulders.
0:21 A young Glenn lies on a beige carpet. Chin resting on his palms, he looks up and to his left. In front of him on the floor is a toy with a few blue and red arms. White text says “My dad and mom bought me RC airplanes.”
0:25 Young Glenn stands in a striped shirt, wearing a cross-body bag and looking into the camera. Smiling, he holds a Lego creation with wheels and small figures sitting on top. Text says “and Lego sets.”
0:27 Two bottle rockets sit on a black table. Overlaying text says “and model rockets and planes.”
0:29 A young Glenn smiles into the camera. He wears a t-shirt and a baseball cap. He stands in front of a green bulletin board with yellow lettering in a hallway. In his hands is another creation involving a metal bar and some plastic components. Overlaying text reads, “From that process, I learned how to make them better.”
0:31 Glenn wears a backward blue baseball cap and a plaid, long sleeve shirt. He is hunched over, looking through a black and silver telescope.Text at the bottom reads, “So when I was younger, I was the subject of bullying in high school, and it made me want to not stand out.”
0:38 Leland Melvin stands with Glenn, with his arm around his shoulders. Leland wears a blue astronaut jumper with the NASA meatball logo. Glenn wears a black pullover. Both smile into the camera. Behind them are blue balloons and curtains. Overlaying text says, “One year, I went to a science symposium in D.C. and waited in line to talk to [former astronaut] Leland Melvin.”
0:43 Glenn and Leland, this time olde, sit at a white table. Text overlay says, “I confided in him, saying I didn’t want to do this anymore. He said, “No, you should do this. We need more Black people in space and engineering.” Further down is an asterisk and “Photo taken of Glenn and Leland years later.”
0:53 Glenn wears a plaid shirt and a backpack. A poster about the James Webb Space Telescope is pasted on the wall to his right. He holds a silver device that resembles a microphone. Text overlay below the image reads, “And then, this later led to me applying for a NASA internship at Goddard Space Flight Center in which I started my whole career.”
0:55 An older Glenn wears a white shirt and stands with his chin resting between the thumb and forefinger of his right hand.Behind him are black and blue panels. On each panel is a white letter, spelling out “D-I-S-C-O-V-E-R,” although the beginning and end of the word are cut off in the shot.
