???? What goes up must come down....at least when we're talking about sounding rockets! For Goddard Glossary, we took a closer look at these smaller rockets launching science to the edge of space.

Video Description:
0:00 A woman with brown and purple hair wearing a black sweatshirt that says NASA in big red letters talks and gestures with her hands in front of a virtual backdrop of a rocket launching against a blue sky. Above her, the words "sounding rocket” are written out phonetically in white text against a black background.
0:03 A sounding rocket held up by a gray scaffolding against a blue sky with puffy white clouds. The sounding rocket engine fires and the rocket launches up through the frame.
0:10 The same woman as before talking in front of a sounding rocket surrounded by a silver fence in a grassy area.
0:16 Animation of a stylized purple sounding rocket launching against a blue and purple gridded background.
0:22 The animation zooms out to show the sounding rocket exiting a stylized representation of Earth’s atmosphere. Dotted lines labeled “30 miles” and “300 miles” appear, and the rocket slows down about halfway between them.
0:23 Fade to a capsule at the back of a sounding rocket falling back toward Earth. The curved edge of Earth looms turquoise in the background.
0:27 The woman talking again.
0:28 The word sounding appears above her, in the same phonetic style as before.
0:31 Long exposure photo of a sounding rocket trail, which looks like a bright yellow line extending from the ground up to the top right corner. The night sky in the background is lit by swirls of green aurora.
0:33 Photo of a sounding rocket launching at night. Most of the picture is dominated by the extremely bright white engine fire extending from the rocket and illuminating the picture. In the top third, the thin red and white rocket itself is visible.
0:35 A long exposure photo of three sounding rocket trails extending from the bottom left to the center of the frame, where they begin to arch back down to Earth. A bright green lidar beam streaks across the top left. The entire background is green aurora and white stars, which appear to be spiraling around from Earth’s rotation.
0:37 A photo of a dark red and white sounding rocket launching against a snowy background and blue sky. The rocket is in the top third of the image, with rocket fire and a trail of steam extending to the ground.
0:39 A long exposure photo of a sounding rocket trail, which starts as a glowing yellow white triangle at the bottom and thins to a single line nearer the top, where the trail starts to arch back down. The rocket is seen launching over a body of water and the sky is dark with dozens of tiny stars.
0:41 The woman talking again.
0:48 A photo of a blue and gray sounding rocket launching against a light blue sky. The trail of steam extends from the rocket down to the bottom right of the image. On the left, a water tower with spindly legs appears slightly below the rocket.
0:50 A long exposure photo of a sounding rocket launch. A bright beam of light extends from the bare dirt ground up against a cloudy sky, where it appears as a ball of light as it pierces the clouds. The entire image is slightly sepia toned from the clouds and rocket fire light.
0:51 Long exposure photo of a sounding rocket trail, which looks like a bright yellow line extending from the ground, where the lights of civilization are glowing, up to the top right corner. The night sky in the background is lighter green with some small smears of aurora light near the ground up to darker nearer the top, all lit by tiny stars.
0:53 Back to the woman talking again.
