Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said Saturday that about 991 structures had been destroyed after wildfires ripped through multiple communities, including Louisville, Superior and an unincorporated area of the county.
The fires tore through homes on Thursday, with smoke and embers creating nearly apocalyptic scenes for residents. When the smoke cleared, holes were all that remained in place of where some homes stood, while others were left in pieces and cars charred from the fires.
On Saturday, snow moved into the area, which Pelle said helped to extinguish several parts of the fire. However, he said there were three people missing following the wildfire and the snow would complicate search efforts as the structures those missing would have been located are under eight inches of snow.
Pelle also said investigations were still ongoing into the cause of the fire, but while they did not locate downed power lines, they did find downed telecommunication lines which he said would not have caused a fire.
