White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a briefing on Tuesday that the “Chinese surveillance balloon was very, very different than what we saw with these three objects,” when speaking about the shoot-downs of high-altitude objects over U.S. and Canadian airspace in recent weeks.

“Completely different operation… Completely different situation,” she added.

Jean-Pierre had been asked about the criticism towards U.S. President Joe Biden for allowing the Chinese spy balloon to traverse across the U.S. before it was shot down once it reached open water, while the latter unidentified objects were quickly ordered to be shot down due to their potential to interfere with commercial air traffic.

Jean-Pierre also said that while military and intelligence agencies are strongly considering the objects to be “benign” and from a private company, she stated that “we just don’t know.” She also said that salvage crews are still working to recover debris from the three objects and didn’t have any information on whether the debris has been located.
