China lifts some COVID-19 restrictions after days of protests

China began to gradually ease its COVID-19 testing requirements and quarantine rules on Friday in some cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, leaving residents feeling some relief.

The policy shift came after anger over the world's toughest curbs fuelled protests — something unprecedented in mainland China since President Xi Jinping took power in 2012. The "zero-COVID" policy was championed by Xi, and while some restrictions are easing, it's unclear what impact it may have on frustrations in the country.

One resident of Beijing told reporters that he felt like people's voices were finally being heard, while a Shanghai resident said there should be "no need to worry" and that people and viruses "should learn to coexist" over time.
