Drone footage captured on Thursday shows hundreds of Hindu devotees bathing amid toxic foam in the Yamuna River in New Delhi, as they celebrate the Chhath Puja festival.

Chhath Puja, a four-day festival, culminates on the sixth day after Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, and holds significance for married women who offer offerings to the sun god.

This year, crowds of devotees gathered despite a noxious foam that sat on the water’s surface.

The New Delhi government’s Water Supply Board has blamed industrial waste and untreated pollutants from neighbouring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh states for the Yamuna’s worsening pollution.
