During question period at the House of Commons on Tuesday, Canadian MPs paid tribute to the late singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, who died at 84 years old the evening before.

Liberal MP Francesco Sorbara reflected on the musician’s career that spanned over six decades, describing how the Canadian musical landscape was shaped by his influence. “Gordon Lightfoot will be greatly missed, but his music will live on forever,” Sorbara said.

“A cloud hangs over the Sunshine City as we mourn the passing of the legendary Gordon Lightfoot,” Conservative MP Adam Chambers said. “Gordon Lightfoot lives in our blood. He's the soundtrack to some of the greatest and most beautiful memories, as well as some of the biggest disasters. And he comforted us during those times.”

At the end of question period, governmental officials held a moment of silence to honour the Canadian icon.
