Three national health-care organizations issued an open letter to governments across Canada on Monday, pressuring provincial leaders to put in place more health programs to help reduce smoking.
The Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Lung Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation made their move amid settlement negotiations with several major tobacco corporations.
The negotiations come years after provinces sued tobacco corporations to recoup health-care costs.
Lawyer Rob Cunniongham, also a senior policy analyst with the Canadian Cancer Society, said the timing is right and that the organizations’ priorities are clear. Katherine Ward reports.
