Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen is in Toronto this weekend inspiring the next generation of aspiring astronauts and sharing an update on plans and preparations for the Artemis II mission to the moon, making him the first Canadian to travel around the moon.

He's become a household name this year, after it was announced in April that Hansen will be the only Canadian on board the historic Artemis 2 mission to the moon. The roughly 10-day mission is slated for the later half of 2024, and plans and preparation are in full swing.

“Sort of imagine being in a minivan and going camping for 10 days but never getting out of the van. That's going to be our life, we'll be bringing food with us the same types of food we eat on the International Space Station,” Hansen said. “I'm excited for the opportunity to see our planet hanging in the vacuum of space in all its glory, that's a very rare opportunity as a human to see that.”

While the goal of the mission is to test the rocket to make sure it can support humans in deep space, Hansen hopes Canadians will reflect on and take pride in the major contributions to space exploration that Canada has made. Global’s Jaden Lee-Lincoln has the details.
