Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains announced on Wednesday that a Canadian astronaut will join Artemis 2 mission to the moon launching in 2023, making Canada the second country in the world to have an astronaut in deep space after the U.S.

The mission will be the first to carry humans to lunar orbit in over 50 years, after the Apollo missions.

Bains also announced Canada has signed the “gateway treaty” with NASA to build a new outpost that will orbit the moon.

Unlike the International Space Station, the gateway won’t have a crew on board working continuously, instead, it will use robotic systems operated by artificial intelligence techniques to maintain space operations when humans are not present.

Bains was be joined virtually by Canadian Space Agency (CSA) President Lisa Campbell and CSA astronauts Jeremy Hansen, Joshua Kutryk, David Saint-Jacques and Jenni Sidey-Gibbons.
