During question period on Thursday, Government House Leader Karina Gould condemned “unequivocally” the attempted “firebombings” earlier this week and the gunfire at two Montreal schools overnight on Thursday.

No arrests have been made but security perimeters were set up at the two schools, which are both located in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood. The perimetres were lifted later in the afternoon, but officers remained at the scene until the end of the school day.

The latest incident in Montreal comes after two attempted firebombings overnight between Monday and Tuesday caused minor damage to the front door of the Congregation Beth Tikvah synagogue and the back door of the nearby Federation CJA office.

In response to a question from Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre about the concrete steps the government is taking to ensure the safety of Jewish Canadians, Gould said “there is no room and there is no place for antisemitism in Canada.”
