Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly made some of her sharpest comments about the Chinese government to date on Wednesday during a speech before University of Toronto's Munk School of Global Affairs.

"We will challenge China when we ought to and we will cooperate with China when we must," she said.

Joly said they would "engage at the highest levels" on the human rights situation in the Xinjiang region, oppose unilateral actions that "threaten the status quo in the Taiwan strait," deepen ties with Taiwan and stand up for freedom of speech and the press in Hong Kong.

She also warned Canadian firms on Wednesday of the "risks" of business with China, stressing people need to be "clear-eyed" when doing business in and with the country.
