Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Wednesday that Canada would announce more sanctions against Russia in the coming days, saying the goal is to "suffocate the Russian regime" and ensure there are "no loopholes."

She also said she had had her deputy minister summon Russia's ambassador to Canada to "make sure he is presented with the images of what happened" in the Ukrainian communities of Irpin and Bucha.

Asked about the safety of citizens in Mariupol, Joly said they have supported Ukrainians in their call to ensure a humanitarian corridor from the embattled city, but said "because of the bad faith of Russians," it has not been upheld. She said Canada calls on Russia again to "offer a form of security" to citizens in Mariupol, adding if they don't, "war has rules" and the Geneva Convention is something all countries should abide by. "When they do not abide by the rules and the Convention and the UN Charter, they're committing war crimes and they're committing also crimes against humanity and they will be held accountable."
