Canada is on track to experience a COVID-19 resurgence, and if the Omicron variant takes hold it could worsen the pandemic, new modelling suggests.
Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) officials presented data outlining the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic on Friday.
It shows the country is primarily seeing an uptick in cases driven by the Delta variant, which remains the dominant strain in Canada.
However, officials said if infections continue to rise and Omicron takes hold it could outpace Delta in January and further drive infections up.
The Omicron variant is now in seven jurisdictions across the country with most of the cases linked to travel, officials said. However, there are some cases of suspected community transmission.
