EG.5 is a new, fast-spreading COVID-19 subvariant now comprising more than a third of all cases in Canada.

The mutation is a cousin of the Omicron variant and it has been circulating amongst Canadians since at least May.

The World Health Organization is classifying the strain as a “variant of interest.”
