Canada must build armed forces "ready for tomorrow" amid rising tension with China: Defence minister

During a keynote speech to the defence community on Thursday, Defence Minister Anita Anand warned that there is a need to strengthen Canada’s military amid global power disruptions and growing international tensions.

“China is an increasingly disruptive global power,” Anand said. “To protect Canadian interests at home and abroad, we must build a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) ready for tomorrow.”

Anand also added that Ottawa will fast-track the purchase of anti-tank, anti-aircraft and anti-drone weapons for the Canadian military with a mechanism last used during the war in Afghanistan.

The Liberal government released a defence policy in 2017, but Anand said a lot has changed in the intervening five years. The minister said an update to the CAF will look at ways to ensure the military is meeting such threats but made no mention of whether the cost will also be a factor.
