Speaking on Thursday after the announcement of a new national risk profile, Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair said that the government is developing a national flood insurance plan.
He added that flood mapping is currently underway and that the government will unveil a flood risk portal in the months ahead, which will allow Canadians and municipalities to access data on flood risks.
Blair said the data obtained from flood mapping will allow insurance providers to provide overland flood insurance for Canadians living in high-risk areas. He added that in areas of extreme risk, the government is looking at ways to potentially underwrite some of the risk where insurance companies may find too high.
