Canada freezes deportation of students scammed through fraudulent university letters: Fraser | FULL

Canada's Immigration Minister Sean Fraser appeared at the immigration committee on Wednesday, speaking about the exploitation scheme targeting certain international students, specifically from India.

Fraser noted that students who were unaware of the fraudulent university letters, and fell victim to the scam, would not be subject to deportation. However, he made it clear during the committee meeting that those who knowingly participated in the scam will be subject to criminal laws and punishment.

The minister added a task force will be established, with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Canada Border Services Agency, to identify the victims of fraud.

The acceptance letters appeared to have been written by universities, but the Canada Border Services Agency informed the students the documents were fake and warned them that they could face deportation, according to reports.

Last week, Fraser promised a “fair outcome” for over 700 international students from India facing deportation after falling victim to a fake college enrolment scam. Fraser did not, however, clarify whether the deportation orders against the students would be put on hold while the cases are resolved.
