Boris Johnson has been in Brussels setting out his conditions for a trade deal with the EU, during a dinner with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The long-running talks between the UK and EU are said to be close to failure and the two leaders are trying to break the deadlock.

Negotiations have been deadlocked on the issue of fair competition rules and the separate issue of fishing quotas.

Before leaving for Brussels Mr Johnson said the EU has made demands that no prime minister could accept.

The EU said it would soon publish contingency plans in case there's no deal, including measures to keep planes flying between the UK and the EU.

Meanwhile supermarkets are being given three months to prepare for additional checks on goods transported to Northern Ireland from Britain after the Brexit transition period ends.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Europe editor Katya Adler, Ireland correspondent Emma Vardy and economics editor Faisal Islam.
