The UK has said that that “significant obstacles” to a post-Brexit trade deal remain with the EU — following emergency talks between Boris Johnson and the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

A Downing Street spokesman said that “very large gaps” remained between the two sides following the dinner meeting in Brussels.

They said that a talks would continue but a firm decision would be made by Sunday 13th December on whether agreement can be reached.

The two leaders had been trying to break the deadlock over the issue of fair competition rules and the separate issue of fishing quotas.

Before leaving for Brussels Mr Johnson said the EU has made demands that no prime minister could accept.

The EU said it would soon publish contingency plans in case there's no deal, including measure to keep planes flying between the UK and the EU.
