Though births have been steadily decreasing since 2016, 2022 saw a more rapid decline amid the COVID-19 pandemic, data from Statistics Canada shows.
Following a one-off spike in 2021, some experts attribute 2022’s whopping 5 per cent drop to families deciding to delay getting pregnant as a result of the onset of the global pandemic and subsequent inflationary costs.
Others suggest it could be related to cultural changes and developments.
