U.S. President Joe Biden said Monday that his administration is tracking a cyberattack on a major U.S. pipeline "extremely closely,” and that he has been personally briefed on the attack each day, and revealed that he’s going to be having a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to get to the bottom of the issue.

Ransom-seeking hackers broke into Colonial Pipeline, prompting the company to shut one of America’s major arteries for fuel delivery.

“I'm going to be meeting with President Putin, and so far, there is no evidence based on, from our intelligence people, that Russia is involved. Although there's evidence that the actors, ransomware, is in Russia. They have some responsibility to deal with this,” the president said.

Colonial’s pipeline network serves major U.S. airports, including Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson Airport, the world’s busiest by passenger traffic, and experts say regional fuel supplies could be impacted if the pipeline stays shut.

He outlined steps that have been taken across the government to quickly respond to the impact and investigate the criminal act. Biden said that includes the FBI releasing details on the ransomware attack, so others can protect themselves.

“My administration takes issue - takes this very seriously. We have efforts underway with the FBI and DOJ, the Department of Justice, to disrupt and prosecute ransomware criminals. And my administration will be pursuing a global effort of ransomware attacks by transnational criminals, who often use global money laundering networks to carry them out, Biden said.”
