U.S. President Joe Biden said Sunday the government would provide any support needed to states affected by Hurricane Henri, now a tropical storm. He also pledged support to the state of Tennessee which saw flash flooding that left several people dead.
Parts of the U.S. Northeast began to feel the effects of Henri late Saturday, with the storm expected to remain at or near hurricane strength when it makes landfall Sunday afternoon. The National Hurricane Center said landfall could be on New York's Long Island or in southern New England. It is also possible to have some impact to Atlantic Canada.
Biden also spoke about the ongoing efforts to evacuate people out of Afghanistan and said tens of thousands have been taken out of the country so far. He stressed flights were not going directly to the U.S., but instead to partner countries for processing and security checks. Biden also thanked civilian airlines that would be providing aircraft to help with the evacuation.
In Afghanistan, a panicked rush of people trying to enter Kabul's international airport resulted in the deaths of seven Afghan civilians in the crowds, according to the British military on Sunday. It is a clear example of the danger still posed to those trying to flee the Taliban's takeover of the country.
