U.S. President Joe Biden marked the one-year anniversary of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, with a call for stricter gun laws.

“Standing there in Uvalde, Jill and I couldn’t help but think that too many schools, too many everyday places have become killing fields,” he said while reflecting on his visit to Uvalde in the wake of the shooting.

Nineteen children and two teachers were killed when a gunman opened fire inside the school. In the wake of the shooting, Uvalde police faced criticism for inaction after surveillance video appeared to show them waiting in a hallway as the massacre is underway.

A month after the shooting in Uvalde, Congress passed the most significant gun legislation in decades. It toughened background checks for young gun buyers, and sought to help states put red flag laws in place and keep firearms out of the hands of domestic violence offenders.

But Biden called for even stricter gun control measures, including a ban on AR-15 assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
