U.S. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden kicked off the holiday season in Washington, D.C. by lighting the National Christmas tree at the Ellipse, a 52-acre part south of the White House. It was the second time the pair has lit the tree since Biden took office.

This year marks the 100th year of the tree lighting ceremony. The National Park Service said the tradition started in 1923 when President Calvin Coolidge walked from the White House to the Ellipse to light a 48-foot Balsam fir.

Biden was introduced by hip-hop artist and actor LL Cool J, who said the holiday tradition has helped bring Americans together even in “tense times.”

The public will be able to view the national Christmas tree as of Dec. 2.
