But still, the agony of waiting, the ecstasy of this uniquely historic moment as an electoral system devised more than two centuries ago holds the world's biggest democracy to ransom.
It is not enough merely to win the most votes - what Mr Biden and Mr Trump need is 270 votes in America's electoral college, and getting there has not proved easy.
When you see how voting translates into electoral college votes, Joe Biden is currently on 253 and Donald Trump has notched up 213 votes towards that magic 270.
As for the states that are still counting, there are four key states with razor-thin margins that are being closely watched: Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania.
Joe Biden has an advantage in Nevada and Arizona and President Trump has a slight lead in Georgia and Pennsylvania.
However, the remaining votes that are trickling in from those states are from areas considered traditional Democrat strongholds, so Joe Biden's team is still feeling optimistic.
