At least 18 people have been killed in a police raid on one of Rio de Janeiro's largest favelas, or low-income communities.
Police say 16 members of organised crime groups have been killed. An officer and a 50-year-old bystander are also among the dead. Authorities have described the success of the operation, but many Brazilians are accusing the police of brutality.
