Brazilian police raided an illegal party at a nightclub in Sao Paulo at dawn on Saturday, with dozens of people in attendance and little social distancing in an enclosed area.

Armed police officers closed down the venue, a nightclub in the west of town, and detained some revellers.

The state decree to curb the spread of COVID-19 prohibits crowding and requires the use of face masks.

Over the past month, Sao Paulo's police have cracked down on more than 700 clandestine parties across the state and have carried out some 14,495 inspections.

More than 328,000 have died from COVID-19 in Latin America's biggest country. It is the world's second highest total after the United States, making Brazil the global epicentre of the outbreak due to a lack of federal restrictions, and an infectious new variant.
