Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan resigned on Sunday, clearing a path for an early election on June 20.

Pashinyan had come under fire for his handling of the conflict with Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh region after agreeing to a Russia-brokered ceasefire.

The decision prompted weeks of heavy protests opposing an end to the fighting and calling on Pashinyan to resign.

Announcing his resignation, Pashinyan said he was returning power to Armenians to decide on the future of the government through free and fair elections.
