After six weeks in office, British Prime Minister Liz Truss said Thursday that she would resign.
Her announcement comes nearly a month after her government's economic plan, which intended to calm the markets and included 45 billion pounds ($50 billion) in unfunded tax cuts, sent the financial markets into turmoil and forced her to pull the proposals back. Lawmakers in her own political party, the Conservative Party, also called on her to quit.

During her announcement, Truss said: “I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.” Truss will however, remain in office for a few more days until a leadership election takes place.
