Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has resigned as an MP bringing an end to a colourful political career spanning nearly two decades.

He stands down in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency after being told he would be sanctioned by the privileges committee, for "knowingly and recklessly" misleading parliament, about parties in Downing Street during lockdown.

In a statement, Mr Johnson said he did not lie and took aim at what he called a “kangaroo court”, determined to find him guilty.
