An alliance of nine anti-government factions have formed an alliance aimed at dismantling Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government, either “by force or by negotiations.”

Spokespersons for the alliance signed an agreement in Washington, D.C. on Friday, piling pressure on Ahmed as rebel forces advance toward the capital of Addis Ababa.

The alliance includes political, military and diplomatic cooperation and expands an existing agreement between the forces from the northern region of Tigray and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), one of the organizers told Reuters.

The conflict in Ethiopia’s north started a year ago when forces loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) seized military bases in Tigray. In response, Ahmed sent troops to the northern region.
