Officials, including Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, provided an update on Saturday regarding the status of the wildfires devastating the province.
When asked about budget cuts, Smith assured the public that although there have been budget cuts for wildfire response, the government is adequately prepared to handle the current crisis.
Dozens of new wildfires were discovered across Alberta amid high temperatures, dangerously dry conditions and high winds on Thursday. As of noon on Friday, about 13,000 people across Alberta were being affected in some way or another by mandatory evacuation orders.
In the previous update, issued just before 7 p.m. on Friday night, Alberta Wildfire said there were 912 active wildfires burning in the province on Friday. Thirty-one of those fires were considered out of control.
The next update will take place at 5 p.m. local time, 7 p.m. ET. It is likely there will be an announcement regarding whether a state of emergency will be evoked.
