Alberta pauses use of COVID-19 antibody treatment Sotrovimab, urges caution ahead of Easter | FULL

Alberta's chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw on Wednesday announced that the province would be pausing further use of the COVID-19 antibody treatment Sotrovimab, saying there was "uncertainty" over whether the monoclonal antibody is effective against the BA.2 subvariant.

She added going forward, they would be using Paxlovid and Remdesivir as options for those who can benefit from early outpatient treatment of COVID-19.

When asked about her own mask-wearing, Hinshaw said that she considers where she is when deciding whether to mask. She said it is still "prudent" to wear masks, especially as COVID-19 cases and related numbers rise, but did not appear to indicate if the province might bring back masking mandates.

She also said that that as people plan for Easter gatherings, they should think about who they will be gathering with and even consider having some parts of the gathering outside to limit potential exposure. However, she said while COVID-19 numbers are increasing and indoor gatherings can create a higher risk of infection if someone has the virus, it's also important to recognize the benefits spending time with others can have for people.
