The 2001 destruction of the two giant Buddhas in Afghanistan’s rugged central highlands is, by far, the most spectacular attack against the historical and cultural heritage of Afghanistan committed by the Taliban.
But 20 years later, one of the country’s famed Buddha statues made a brief virtual return on March 9 as a three-dimensional projection onto the alcove where the statue stood for centuries.
Many Afghans living in central Bamiyan province fear the Taliban are on the verge of returning to power after signing a landmark deal with the US.
