In an agreed-upon deal both Russia and Ukraine sent home 90 prisoners of war (POWs) each between Tuesday and Wednesday. This comes as the latest of multiple sporadic exchanges in the countries’ ongoing war, which began 28 months ago.

In a statement given from Kyiv on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy alluded to more exchanges in the future. “We are working to return all our people from Russian captivity home, to Ukraine. Every single one. We're not forgetting anyone,” he said.

“It was unexpected,” an ex-POW from Russia told a reporter on Wednesday, after making his way back to Moscow. “Everybody was smiling, everybody was happy,” he said of his return.

The prisoner swap was the first since May 31 and overseen by the United Arab Emirates, who acted as an intermediary.
