U.S. President Biden spoke at the White House on Thursday about the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner as part of a prisoner exchange with Russia.

Russia has freed Griner in exchange for a notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

The swap occurred at the Abu Dhabi airport in the United Arab Emirates, Biden said.

"I'm glad to be able to say that Britney's in good spirits. She's relieved to finally be heading home," he added.

Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who's been imprisoned for months on drug charges. She was sentenced on Aug. 4 to nine years in a penal colony on charges of possessing and smuggling drugs. She had pleaded guilty, but said she had made an "honest mistake" and had not meant to break the law.
