York Regional Police say a six-year-old boy was struck and killed by a school bus picking up children for school in Kleinburg, Ont., on Wednesday morning. Const. James Dickson told reporters the child died at the scene and that the incident happened at around 8 a.m. in a residential area.

Dickson said the school bus was in the area picking kids up for school, but it is unknown how many children were on the bus at the time. The school bus driver remained at the scene and is co-operating with investigators, Dickson said.

"This is very, very sad," one neighbour who lives in the area but did not witness the incident told Global News. "As a mother, I’ve been living here for the past five years and this has never happened before. This is heartbreaking for me."

It is unclear how the child was struck by the bus. Images from the scene show forensics investigators examining the school bus.

Global's Jaden Lee-Lincoln reports on the scene.
