“No more deaths”: Migrants who died in Texas truck tragedy honoured in vigil

Activists and migrants gathered in the border town of Tijuana in northern Mexico on Monday to demand justice for 53 migrants found dead in a truck in San Antonio, Texas last week.

Chanting "no more deaths," lighting candles and fixing crucifixes on the border fence, the activists and migrants honoured those who lost their lives crossing the border, hoping for a better life.

"We want to create awareness about what is going on. How can we celebrate Independence Day when people are being trapped in an environment of hate, in an environment of fear, dying trying to cross the border?" asked activist Hugo Castro.

The truck carried migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, and was discovered abandoned last week in a desolate, industrial area on the outskirts of San Antonio, Texas, near a highway about 250 km north of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Temperatures in the area that day had soared as high as 39.4 degrees Celsius, and authorities called to the scene had found no water supplies or signs of working air conditioning inside the cargo trailer.

Mexicans accounted for about half of those who perished in the heat. Eleven people, including minors, remain hospitalized.
