The bodies of 46 migrants were found inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas on Monday, in one of the most recent deadly incidents of human smuggling along the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to officials, the truck was found next to railroad tracks on the city's southern outskirts. There were also 16 others found inside transported to hospital with heat stroke and exhaustion, including four minors. No children were among the dead.

"We're not supposed to open up a truck and see stacks of bodies in there," San Antonio fire chief Charles Hood said, adding they were working through "behavioural health" for those staff members who found the bodies.

Police chief William McManus said a person who works in a nearby building heard a cry for help and came to investigate. There is now a federal investigation underway, he said, and three people were in custody though their involvement was not yet clear.

On Tuesday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said the death toll had risen to 50.
