Traffic on Highway 1 west of Calgary was forced to a crawl most of Easter Monday, after protests closed all but one lane. It was part of a series of rallies held across Canada in response to an increase of the federal carbon pricing on April 1.

Hundreds of protesters, many waving Canadian and Alberta flags and holding “axe the tax” signs, blocked the major highway down to a single lane. RCMP officers were on hand to monitor the event.

"I just wonder if this little protest here magnified all across Canada, how many voters that represents in the next election," protester Dieter Conrath said.

Global’s Sarah Offin has more on the backlash from Canadians feeling priced out by Ottawa’s climate action.
