Around 3,000 contract faculty, teaching and graduate assistants, research assistants, and part-time librarians at York University in Toronto have gone on strike, after negotiations with the institution failed on Monday.

"We have retroactive wage increase demands like many public sector workers right now, we have demand that are really aimed at just helping us to catch up so that we can afford to eat and pay rent," said Zoe Newman, Contract faculty at York University and part of CUPE 3903 bargaining team.

The strike has left the students in the middle, as they are now facing uncertainty and disruption to their studies.
