A York Regional Police officer heading into work on Wednesday morning was killed in a head-on crash in Markham, Ont.

York police said emergency crews were called to the area of Major Mackenzie Drive East and Warden Avenue at around 6 a.m. for a report of a two-vehicle collision. When officers arrived, they found a white Honda Accord and learned one driver had been killed after a collision with a Porsche Cayenne, police said.

Police initially did not release details about the victim or anyone else who was injured in the crash, but Global News learned that the individual killed was a York Regional Police officer who was driving into work. In a statement issued later Wednesday morning, police confirmed that 38-year-old Const. Travis Gillespie died at the scene of the crash.

“It’s heartbreaking and it just reminds all of us that at any time, whether we are in uniform or outside of our uniform, that tragic events can take place,” said one officer who was on the scene.

Global’s Catherine McDonald has more details on the officer involved and the investigation.
