The global race to secure the supply of microchips is entering a new phase as memories of pandemic shortages spur governments to take action. A German delegation is currently in Taiwan hoping to secure a deal that would see the world's biggest chipmaker TSMC open its first European factory in Germany. TSMC has already committed to opening a plant in the US state of Arizona next year and is setting up operations in Japan as well. Both the United States and the European Union are seeking to entice chip manufacturers with generous subsidies.
