Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir of Qatar, welcomed the world at the end of a spectacular opening ceremony in the city of Al Khor.
But the elation turned to disappointment for the host nation before the night was over, as Qatar lost 0-2 to Ecuador in the first match.
