It has been 12 years in the making, and finally, the first football World Cup to be held in the Middle East kicked off in Qatar.
Sheik Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the emir of Qatar, welcomed the world at the end of a spectacular opening ceremony in the city of Al Khor.
But the elation turned to disappointment for the host nation before the night was over, as Qatar lost 0-2 to Ecuador in the first match.
