Witnesses described chaotic scenes from the deadly stampede that killed at least 149 people in the South Korean capital Seoul when a huge crowd celebrating Halloween surged into an alley in a nightlife area on Saturday night.
A further 150 people were injured in the melee that took place at about 10:20 p.m. in Seoul's Itaewon district.
“Seeing this incident, I think the police were not prepared enough. There were way too many people and it was too crowded. I know the policemen and rescue workers are working hard, but I would say there was a lack of preparation,” said 21-year-old witness Moon Ju-young.
South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol visited the site of the stampede and declared a period of national mourning on Sunday.
