The French author who won this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature, Annie Ernaux, voiced her support on Thursday for abortion activists around the world and for the women leading protests against the Iranian regime.
Ernaux, who is the first French woman to win the prestigious prize, said the award was a “new responsibility” to continue the fight against “injustice.”
“I can tell you, I will fight until my last breath so that women be able to choose to become mothers or choose not to,” she said, voicing her support for abortion as “the core of women’s freedom.”
Ernaux also spoke out in support of protests against the Iranian regime, which were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died while in the custody of Iran’s morality police.
The Swedish Academy said Ernaux had been awarded the Nobel Prize for “the courage and clinical acuity” in her largely autobiographical books examining personal memory and social inequality.
