A fast growing wildfire that is believed to have been triggered by lightning threatened residents and their homes in Kamloops, B.C., Thursday night.

Local authorities asked residents to evacuate as a precaution. Some were told they could return home as the fires were brought under control, while others were advised to seek shelter with friends and relatives.

New evacuations were also underway in central and southeastern British Columbia, including Castlegar, following a significant escalation of overnight fire activity.

Multiple videos posted to social media on July 1 show large fires burning in the distance in Kamloops, and plumes of smoke wafting above Castlegar.

Days of record-breaking temperatures have seen wildfires tearing through the western province. On Wednesday, more than 1,000 people in and around Lytton were evacuated as the town was engulfed and later destroyed by a fast-moving fire.
