Why is the US unequivocal in its support for Israel?

Two months now into Israel's war on Gaza and the US has vetoed yet another UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire.
Washington’s move has been condemned around the globe. Jordan reflected the view of many critics by calling the veto a licence for Israel to carry on with a massacre.
The Biden Administration appears to be as supportive of Israel as previous ones and that has been US policy since President Truman recognised the state. However, the relationship has not always been plain sailing.
