More than a thousand people have staged protests in the Russian region of Bashkortostan, after police arrested and sentenced a local activist and Kremlin critic.
Bashkortostan is one of Russia's semi-autonomous republics. It has reportedly seen an above-average number of casualties in the war in Ukraine. Demonstrations started on Wednesday when police arrested Fail Alsynov. He had publicly criticized Moscow's mobilisation drive for the war. Protests have now spread to the regional capital, where police detained several demonstrators.
